PERMISSIVE ACCESS SCHEME
The sandy paths of the Estate make for easy walking and much of the woodland area has been opened up for public access under a Permissive Access scheme in partnership with the Forestry Commission. The bluebells and foxgloves in spring make a wonderful sight in recently coppiced chestnut plantations and the North Downs Way long distance footpath is a focal point for many of the local walks as it winds through the estate.

Puttenham Common
The Common extends to over 500 acres of open space used primarily for recreation. Dog walkers, horse riders and locals taking a stroll or ramble enjoy spectacular views of Surrey's finest countryside looking south towards the South Downs National Park. The varied landscapes of The Common range from open heathland to wooded paths and hidden valleys and the iron age fort is not only a Scheduled Ancient Monument but is also within the Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) which denotes part of The Common.

Lower Puttenham Common which is crisscrossed by footpaths adjoins and is characterized by silver birch trees and sandy tracks.

The Common is part of the Hampton Estate but under an agreement with Surrey County Council all access (footpaths, bridleways, way marked routes and car parks) are managed by The Surrey Wildlife Trust. The estate is responsible for the management of the landscape and is actively enhancing vistas and habitat corridors.

FILMING LOCATION
The Estate is used as a filming location and provides a wide variety of buildings, backdrops, landscapes and environments for both stills and motion photography. The proximity of the Estate to the major film studios make it an ideal venue especially when working on day rates.

Recent productions filmed on location at Hampton Estate include ‘The Hollow’ an LWT Poirot Production featuring David Suchet and Edward Fox, and ‘Days of Misrule’ an episode of Midsomer Murders made by Bentley Productions starring John Nettles.

In 2009 the estate was used by Universal Studios as a major location in the making of 'Robin Hood', Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe's adaptation of the exploits of Nottingham's famous outlaw. Hampton's historic parkland and gently rolling valleys adorned with fine specimen trees became home to the village of Nottingham, circa 1186. It came complete with outlying farms, river crossings, a chapel, blacksmiths shop and a myriad of houses, streets and huts centred around a corn exchange and market place. Russell Crowe and Kate Blanchett starred in the production which involved a cast and crew of almost 1000 and were on site for over a year.

HORSE RIDING PERMIT SCHEME
Not only do walkers enjoy the tracks and paths but the Estate also runs a horse riding permit scheme to help give alternative safe routes for local riders. The number of riders is limited and each member is issued with an annual bridle tag on payment of a fee. Again the route links existing bridleways with Puttenham Common and provides a variety of open fields, field headlands and wooded tracks which make for safe off road paths away from local traffic.

Bed and Breakfast on the Estate
Sarah Webster (nee Thornton) and her husband Clive run a thriving Bed and Breakfast at Shoelands House within the Hampton Estate.
